Five rehab centres near Toronto made this list, and the differences between them start with the buildings themselves. A 50-room hospital in midtown keeps its own pharmacy on site, three programs run out of houses in the city or its northern suburbs, and the fifth occupies Victorian-era estates an hour east, close to Lake Ontario. Stays stretch from a four-day detox at one centre to 90 days at two others.
How Can You Check a Centre’s Claims Before Calling?
Accreditation Canada runs a public provider search on its website, where a family can confirm by name that the badge on a centre’s homepage matches a current listing. Funding is the second claim worth testing. Public money pays for residential treatment only in designated beds, and of the five centres reviewed here, only Renascent and EHN Bellwood Toronto hold them; the other three charge privately, with workplace benefit plans sometimes covering part of the fee.
1. Addiction Rehab Toronto
Addiction Rehab Toronto runs its residential program from a home at 4 Warrendale Court in Etobicoke, in the city’s northwest end, with licensed medical staff available around the clock for on-site detox. The centre treats concurrent depression, anxiety and PTSD, programs begin at 30 days, and anyone who completes the 45-day program and later relapses becomes eligible for readmission under ART’s recovery guarantee.
Amenities at the Etobicoke house cover the basics of residential life:
- semi-private rooms
- chef-prepared meals
- a gym and a recreation room
- a sober living residence for graduates
Shared rooms mean clients give up some privacy. ART’s homepage leads with media appearances and business-directory awards but publishes no outcome figures for its own clients, and the guarantee’s terms are given only by phone. No fees are posted, though ART’s FAQ places private treatment in the city between $10,000 and $30,000 a month, and ART accepts private insurance and Medicard financing.
2. Freedom From Addiction
Freedom From Addiction’s residential centre at 33 Victoria Street in Aurora, in York Region, now operates as York Addiction & Mental Health. Accreditation Canada has granted it Exemplary standing, the accreditor’s top rating, and stays of 30, 45, 60 or 90 days include medically supervised detox and 24/7 care. Master’s-level clinicians treat concurrent disorders such as ADHD, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and OCD with CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing and the Trauma Resiliency Model.
Daily life in Aurora centres on structure more than leisure:
- a home-style residence
- a personalized fitness program
- life skills sessions
- a lifetime aftercare program and a lifelong family program
An unrelated American referral line still uses the old name online, so confirm the Aurora address before sharing health or insurance details. Treatment aims for complete abstinence, with medication used to support detox and recovery when clinicians judge it necessary, and anyone planning to stay on methadone or buprenorphine long term should raise that on the first call.

3. Canadian Centre for Addictions
Head east out of Toronto for just over an hour to reach Port Hope and Cobourg, the two lakeside towns where the Canadian Centre for Addictions runs its residential treatment. Hillcrest Mansion sits 68 minutes away by car, with the Woodlawn Inn six minutes farther along in Cobourg, both of them Victorian-era properties. The centre has held Accreditation Canada status since 2018. Nurses stay on site 24 hours a day through medical detox. How long a client stays comes out of the intake assessment, which weighs the substance against the years of use before settling on 30, 45, 60, 75 or 90 days.
Amenities differ slightly between the two houses:
- a private room for every client
- chef-prepared meals
- yoga, meditation, fitness sessions and art therapy
- walking trails and Lake Ontario views at Hillcrest Mansion
- meditation gardens, a spa and massage services at the Woodlawn InnÂ
For families weighing a luxury rehab in Toronto against options outside the city, the hour of highway also separates a client from the people and places tied to their drinking or drug use. Graduates join Roots of Recovery, an alumni community whose monthly in-person events, such as go-karting and tree-top trekking, bring current clients and alumni together. Visiting from the city means a round trip of more than two hours, the main drawback for families who plan to visit regularly.
4.Renascent
Renascent, the only non-profit on this list, offers a publicly funded 28-day live-in program and a 35-day fee-for-service stay. Founded in 1970, it reports helping more than 50,000 people and runs four treatment centres in Toronto and Brooklin, part of Whitby. Treatment is built on 12-step facilitation, with CBT, DBT and acceptance and commitment therapy added.
Residential life at Renascent leans on community:
- home-like live-in centres, with men at the Madison Avenue Centre and women at the Graham Munro Centre
- self-care and experiential social learning sessions
- family programs that include children and teens
- lifetime alumni meetings, workshops and social events
Renascent’s program listings describe counselling in detail but name no fitness, spa or outdoor facilities. The listed stays end at 28 or 35 days, which rules it out for anyone who needs 60 or 90 days of residential care, and the 12-step curriculum includes spiritual education that clients looking for a secular program may not want.

5. EHN Bellwood Toronto
EHN Bellwood Toronto is a purpose-built, licensed rehab hospital at 175 Brentcliffe Road in midtown, operating for more than 40 years. Physicians and around-the-clock nurses run on-site detox beds and a pharmacy; stays range from a 4-day detox to 64 days or longer, and specialized inpatient tracks cover trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, healthcare professionals and OCD, the last with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
The 62,000-square-foot building is set up as a hospital with recreation space added:
- 17 private, 16 semi-private and 17 standard rooms
- a gymnasium and a fitness room
- access to the Sunnybrook ravine
- yoga, art therapy and fitness classes
- free family drop-in sessions, one year of aftercare and lifelong alumni membership
With only 17 private rooms, a private stay is not guaranteed, and the co-ed facility restricts cell phone use during treatment. Bellwood posts no prices, and its FAQ warns that admission can be delayed when workplace insurance covers only part of a stay and ministry funding pays the rest.
When Can Treatment Start?
Admission timing varies across the five centres, since the Aurora centre advertises admission without a waitlist and CCFA admits most clients within three to five days of the first call. Bellwood ties inpatient availability to occupancy, and families counting on a funded bed can ask Renascent and Bellwood at the same time and keep a private centre in reserve if a date does not come through.
