SEARS CANADA TO INCREASE ITS FOCUS ON PLUS-SIZE WOMENSWEAR

Image: Sears Canada

Sears Canada will increase its focus on plus-sized womensear. It will initially open five plus-sized shops-in-store of about 4,000 square feet. Much of the new merchandise will be by Penningtons, a plus-size women’s clothing label owned by Reitmans. Pennington’s also has free-standing stores.

The five Canadian Sears stores will pilot the plus-sized womens shops and Penningtons will also be carried on Sears’ website. More Sears plus-sized departments are expected to open nation-wide in 2014.

Penningtons is known for its reasonably priced, quality womenswear which starts at size 14. Sears will be the only Canadian store to carry Penningtons apart from Penningtons free-standing stores.

Sears Canada has started positioning itself as a department store that focusses on suburban and smaller-community customers. Expanding women’s plus-sized offerings may be an intelligent move in an effort to keep existing customers who may no longer fit into some clothing sold by competitors.

ERIN MILLS TOWN CENTRE TO HAVE THE WORLD’S LARGEST GLASS SPHERE AS PART OF ITS $100 MILLION TRANSFORMATION

Rendering: Erin Mills Town Centre

Mississauga’s Erin Mills Town Centre will receive a $100 million update. It will be the mall’s first major renovation since it opened in 1989. The renovation coincides with the mall’s 25th anniversary.

Changes will include the world’s largest glass sphere 90 feet in diameter, new skylights and windows, and a new ‘main court’ with infinity pool. The mall’s food court will be updated and will be expanded over two floors. Despite all these changes, however, the mall won’t be increasing its square footage.

Construction begins this summer and Phase 1 of the new food court is scheduled to finish in the fall of 2014. A new Target store will open in the summer of 2014.

LOBLAW’S LATEST GROCERY STORE CONCEPT – SMALL, URBAN & HEALTH-CONSCIOUS

Future location of 'Nutshell' on King St W. Image: Retailer's Facebook Page.

This fall, Loblaw will open its latest grocery store concept called ‘Nutshell‘ with the slogan ‘live life well’. It will be a smaller-format, health-conscious food and lifestyle retailer. It will occupy about 9,000 square feet at 500 King Street West in Toronto. It appears that the retailer will also focus on healthy lifestyles including exercise and yoga. Part of our research on this new retail concept is from the retailer’s Facebook Page and Twitter Account.

If the Nutshell concept takes off, Loblaw could expand it Canada-wide. The 9,000 square foot store floorplate means the retailer could open at the bottom of newly-built condo towers or in retrofitted heritage buildings like its first Toronto location.

The store will be located inside the King Street West area’s oldest building, built in 1872.

Downtown grocery stores have become more common as Canadian urban cores continue to attract more residents. This is especially obvious in Downtown Toronto and Vancouver. City centres in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal have also seen an increase in their populations and have attracted new food retailers as a result.

Thank you to “bAuHaUs” of Urban Toronto for informing us of the new store’s size and location. This same source also provided us with this City of Toronto Building Application submission mentioning the retailer’s arrival and its Lowlaw ownership.

STAY STRONG, CANADA…

Massive damage to Toronto's Union Station (and the water isn't helping, either)

We’re a bit distracted at Retail Insider this week, given Toronto’s flooding as a result of a massive rain storm. Toronto, we send you our best and hope things get back to normal in Canada’s financial and retail capital.

Calgary recently saw traumatic flooding that saw the city come to a crippling halt. Efforts have persevered and things seem to be getting back to normal in Calgary, including its hosting the Calgary Stampede which kicked off this weekend.

Our prayers are with people in Quebec and the recent train derailment tragedy that, sadly, may have killed dozens.

IS IT TIME FOR TOD’S TO OPEN FREE-STANDING CANADIAN STORES?

Holt Renfrew Vancouver

We were recently strolling through Vancouver’s Holt Renfrew and noticed the small Tod’s accessories shop had a temporary sign reading ‘Salvator Ferragamo’. It’s only temporary, as Holt’s sold out of all its Tod’s bags.

This speaks to the success of the brand in Vancouver. And it leads us to ask the question: Is it time for Tod’s to open free-standing Canadian stores?

For those unfamiliar, Tod’s is a luxury Italian footwear and leathergoods designer/retailer with stores around the world. In Canada, it is carried at selected Holt Renfrew stores but has no free-standing Canadian locations. It has 10 American stores (New York City, Bal Harbour, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Costa Mesa, Dallas, Las Vegas and 3 in Honolulu) and is available at selected Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom stores.

LUXURY RETAIL COMING TO PEARSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Toronto Pearson Airport Retail

Luxury retail will finally arrive at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport‘s Terminal 1. The airport’s duty free concession, Nuance Group Duty Free, will expand its offerings by about 4,000 square feet to include luxury labels Burberry, Coach, Michael Kors, Omega, Gucci, Mont Blanc and Salvatore Ferragamo, among others.

The luxury brand expansion will bring Nuance’s total square footage in Pearson to about 20,500 square feet. Nuance plans to include a greater variety of internationally renowned food and fashion brands for its Toronto airport location as well.

This expansion coincides with Nuance’s securing a new five-year contract to continue operating its Toronto duty-free concession. Duty free retailers typically bid on airport retail contracts for a fixed period of time.

Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is Canada’s busiest, having handled about 35 million passengers in 2012.

Toronto Pearson Airport Retail

Vancouver International Airport is Canada’s second busiest with about half as many passengers – 17.6 million in 2012. And yet, Vancouver’s airport has had considerable luxury retail for some time.

World Duty Free currently operates Vancouver’s duty-free concession and it includes a full-sized shop for luxury French label Hermès and smaller shops/selections for labels Burberry, Cartier, Bulgari, Alfred Dunhill, Mont Blanc, Folli Follie, Etro, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bally and MCM, among others.

METROTOWN GOES UPSCALE: WEEKEND BY MAX MARA, MICROSOFT and TAG HEUER AMONG NEW TENANTS

Photo: Metropolis at Metrotown TAG Heuer

Burnaby BC’s Metropolis at Metrotown is becoming more upscale with the inclusion of Canada’s second Weekend by MaxMara store, opening this September. Also opening this fall wil be Canada’s third Microsoft store which was announced earlier this week. A Tag Heuer boutique recently opened adjacent to the mall’s recently relocated Ann-Louise Jewellers. Gastown-based Oak + Fort has also opened its second Vancouver-area retail store at Metrotown.

Weekend by Max Mara location, marked by our source ‘Seb’ with a star

Weekend by Max Mara will be just over 2,000 square feet and will be located on the second level of the mall’s ‘Atrium Court’. Max Mara’s Weekend label is a less expensive, more casual version of the mainline Max Mara label that has three Vancouver locations (three locations for a city is very rare â€“ most cities that have a Max Mara store only have one location). Canada’s first Weekend by Max Mara store opened in November 2012 at Vancouver’s Oakridge Shopping Centre.

The Tag Heuer boutique at Ann-Louise Jewellers (top image) is not a corporately owned store, but a small shop-in-store with a mall entrance. Nevertheless, its mall entrance gives it a presence that brings prestige to the mall. There are currently no free-standing Tag Heuer boutiques in Canada though we have word that franchised Tag stores could open in Toronto and Vancouver.

Oak+Fort in Metropolis at Metrotown

Vancouver-based Oak + Fort opened its second location at Metrotown last month. The retailer is known for its interesting and somewhat alternative fashions. Its other Vancouver location is on Water Street in Gastown, and it has a store on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton. We think it’s a bit unusual for a retailer with somewhat funky, historical locations like Gastown and Whyte Avenue to open in a suburban mall like Metrotown.

These retailers join other moderately upscale stores including Coach, Browns Shoes, Michael Kors, Kiehl’s and Sephora. Several years ago these retailers would have been unheard of at Metrotown, as the mall has long been considered mid-market and its location on the Skytrain line has made it popular with a younger, less fashionable group of shoppers from southeastern suburbs such as Surrey.

Metropolis at Metrotown – Microsoft

We recently reported on an expansion at Metropolis that will include the demolition of a Sears-owned site, to be replaced by seven towers and new retail (including a replacement Sears store). Other parts of the mall will be seeing renovations and new construction, and we’ll go into more detail about that at a later date.

Thank you to our retail insider ‘Seb’ who provided us content and tips, as well as the photos of Oak + Fort, Microsoft Store hoardings and the floorplan with Weekend by Max Mara’s location.

LA MAISON SIMONS OPENS ITS 9TH STORE IN AUGUST

Image: Simons

*****UPDATE: This store opens on August 15th, 2013*****

La Maison Simons continues its Canadian store expansion with a 9th location opening mid-August at Montreal’s Les Galeries d’Anjou. It will be the second-largest store in the chain after its 118,000 square foot West Edmonton Mall location.

The 115,000 square foot d’Anjou Simons will be two floors and will include a similar openness and art installations as its award-winning West Edmonton Mall store. Artist Rachel Denny’s knit animal heads, for example, were a hit at the Edmonton store. Simons won’t say what other artists will be featured in the d’Anjou store but we can expect something unique and innovative. Simons insists that each of its store interiors be unique and it spends a fortune doing so.

An interesting addition to the d’Anjou store will be a restaurant concept called Soupesoup. The concept was developed by Caroline Dumas, who has six Montreal restaurants and is the author of a cookbook. Her food is known for being fresh, simple, and inspired by home cooking.

Simons is in the process of a Canada-wide expansion that could see new stores open in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto, among other cities. Simons will open its first Ottawa store in 2015 at the Rideau Shopping Centre and could open a second Ottawa-area location in Gatineau. It opened its West Edmonton Edmonton location in October of 2012. It is currently negotiating space for two Toronto locations in space formerly occupied by Sears stores.

For those looking to work at Simons d’Anjou, this is a link to their job postings.

CANADA’S TOP MALL COULD BECOME TOPS IN NORTH AMERICA: YORKDALE SURPASSES $1 BILLION IN SALES

Photo: Yorkdale

Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre could become North America’s top selling mall. Yorkdale’s sales have surpassed $1 billion per year and it is Canada’s number-one mall in terms of revenue. Incredibly, mall management expects sales of $2 billion annually by 2018.

The $2 billion sales projection is based on the expectation that Yorkdale’s sales will substantially increase with its new Nordstrom-anchored expansion as well as a possible La Maison Simons store that could replace part of the mall’s current Sears store. Sears is set to vacate Yorkdale in early 2014 after having sold its lease to landlord Oxford Properties.

The highest selling mall in the United States is South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California. It has sales of about $1.5 billion and has no plans for any expansion as far as we know. If things go as forecasted, Yorkdale’s revenues could surpass South Coast Plaza’s within three years.

Yorkdale’s $1 billion sales are measured based on revenues from June 2012 to May 2013. It is the first Canadian mall to achieve sales in excess of $1 billion. Other Canadian malls that could surpass $1 billion in the next few years include Calgary’s Chinook Centre and Vancouver’s Pacific Centre. Both of these Canadian malls will also incorporate Nordstrom as anchors.

Yorkdale is also one of Canada’s most productive malls with sales in excess of $1,300 per square foot.  Competing Canadian malls include Vancouver’s Pacific Centre and Oakridge Shopping Centre as well as the Toronto’s Eaton Centre. If sales forecasts are accurate, Yorkdale could become Canada’s most productive mall in addition to being its top selling mall.

North America’s most productive mall is the Bal Harbour Shops north of Miami, with sales of about $2,800 per square foot.

If The Hudson’s Bay Company succeeds with negotiations to purchase Saks Fifth Avenue, a Saks concession or full-sized Saks store could arrive at Yorkdale as well. This is speculation at the moment but a Saks Fifth Avenue could compliment a mall that will include anchors Nordstrom, a possible La Maison Simons, and a world-class Holt Renfrew store that is expected to complete its renovation and expansion this fall.
