Calgary will launch its first large-scale European-inspired winter market Nov. 19 at Eau Claire Plaza, bringing more than 35 market chalets, live entertainment, seasonal food and beverages, and a heated gathering tent to the downtown location for 26 days.
The inaugural Calgary Winter Market is being presented in partnership with the City of Calgary’s #ExploreDowntown initiative and Edelweiss Village. The event will offer a public preview on Nov. 19, followed by an official opening ceremony Nov. 20 featuring remarks from Mayor Jeromy Farkas and event organizers.
Organizers say the market is intended to become an annual holiday attraction, adding a new seasonal event to the city’s downtown programming and bringing visitors to the recently revitalized Eau Claire Plaza.

“There’s something truly special about the way European Christmas markets bring people together,” says Lindsay Luhnau, co-founder of the Calgary Winter Market. “It’s not just about the shopping or the food; it’s about slowing down, enjoying the season and creating memories with the people you love.”
“We want to bring that same feeling to Calgary and create an experience that people look forward to year after year. From the moment we light the plaza for the first time, we hope Calgarians feel like they’re part of something special.”
The market will operate through Dec. 24 and is inspired by the Scandinavian concept of hygge, which emphasizes warmth, comfort and togetherness. Organizers say the programming is designed to encourage people to gather, shop and participate in seasonal activities in an outdoor setting.

More than 35 market chalets and a heated Brauhaus
The market will feature traditional wooden chalets showcasing products from local artisans, international goods and holiday gifts. Food vendors and seasonal beverage offerings will also be part of the event, alongside entertainment and family-oriented activities.
A central feature will be a heated Brauhaus tent modelled on traditional European beer tents. The venue will serve as a gathering space for visitors of all ages, with beers on tap from Establishment Brewing, long communal wooden tables and a stage for live music.
Additional programming will include carousel rides, live performances, holiday characters, children’s activities and crafts. The range of attractions is intended to provide activities for families and other visitors throughout the market’s 26-day run.
The event will also introduce traditional European-style mugs, which visitors can purchase as souvenirs. Inspired by collectible mugs commonly found at Christmas markets in Germany and other parts of Europe, the mugs will be available for enjoying glühwein, or mulled wine, and other seasonal beverages.
Visitors will be able to take the mugs home as keepsakes from the inaugural event.

A new downtown holiday attraction
The Calgary Winter Market’s partnership with the City of Calgary’s #ExploreDowntown initiative places the event within broader efforts to bring activity to the city’s core. Eau Claire Plaza, the market’s location, has recently undergone revitalization and will serve as the setting for the European-inspired village.
The Nov. 20 opening ceremony will formally launch the event, with the mayor and organizers expected to address visitors. The market will then continue daily programming through Christmas Eve, offering a combination of retail shopping, food and beverage sales, entertainment and family activities.
Organizers say their longer-term ambition is to establish the Calgary Winter Market as an annual holiday tradition, with the inaugural event marking the first year of the downtown attraction.
