Apple has introduced its new 14-inch MacBook Pro in Canada, with the M6 processor delivering faster graphics, improved on-device artificial intelligence performance and upgraded wireless connectivity. The new model starts at $2,799, with pre-orders opening October 28 ahead of its November 6 retail release.

The latest MacBook Pro is largely a processor upgrade rather than a hardware redesign. Apple has retained the familiar display, chassis and port configuration, concentrating its improvements on computing performance and the ability to run increasingly demanding AI applications directly on the device.

The Canadian starting price also deserves attention. At $2,799, the M6 model enters the market $700 above the M5’s original $2,099 starting price, although the comparison is not entirely equivalent because Apple has doubled the base storage capacity from 512GB to 1TB.

M6 Processor Puts More Emphasis on AI Performance

The M6 chip features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, adding two cores to each compared with the M5 generation. Apple claims the new processor delivers up to 30 per cent faster graphics performance and up to 25 per cent faster processing for certain on-device AI workloads, based on its internal testing.

The chip also includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says delivers up to 1.9 times the performance of the previous generation in specified benchmarks. These improvements are intended for applications including video editing, 3D modelling, software development and running large language models locally rather than relying entirely on cloud-based processing.

Apple is making a particularly strong case to owners of older MacBook Pro models. Its testing indicates up to 11 times faster graphics performance and up to 13 times faster AI performance compared with the original M1 generation, although those figures reflect specific workloads rather than general computing performance.

The laptop ships with macOS 27, bringing expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities and Siri AI integration. Features include contextual assistance across applications, AI-supported writing and editing, and additional productivity tools, although some Siri AI functions remain subject to beta availability, language requirements and regional restrictions.

Higher Entry Price, Familiar Hardware

Beyond the processor, the hardware changes are relatively limited. The M6 MacBook Pro includes 16GB of unified memory as standard, configurable up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth reaching 170GB per second.

Wireless connectivity has been upgraded to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while the laptop retains its Liquid Retina XDR display, 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, HDMI connection, SDXC card slot, MagSafe charging and three Thunderbolt 4 ports. Apple continues to advertise up to 24 hours of battery life, with fast charging capable of reaching 50 per cent in approximately 30 minutes using a compatible higher-wattage USB-C adapter.

The new MacBook Pro is available in space black and silver, with an optional nano-texture display designed to reduce reflections. Education pricing starts at $2,659 for eligible Canadian customers.

Pre-orders are available through Apple’s Canadian online store, with the M6 MacBook Pro arriving at Apple Stores and authorized resellers on November 6. Additional configurations and technical specifications are available through Apple Canada’s MacBook Pro website.
