Filson Announces First 2 Canadian Stores

Seattle-based heritage fashion brand Filson has announced that it will open its first two Canadian stores this spring, after confirming plans to enter the country earlier this year

Filson’s first Canadian store will open at 47 Water Street in Vancouver’s trendy and historical Gastown area. A second location will follow soon after, at 694 Queen Street West in Toronto. Both locations are considered to be among the “coolest” in Canada, featuring a mix of local as well as international retailers in a variety of character buildings.

The Canadian retail store designs will feature custom furniture built from local salvaged wood, iron beams, wooden floors and imagery of Filson dating back to the late 1800’s, according to the company. Street level windows will showcase apparel, bags, and accessories for both men and women.

Filson partnered with Think Retail for its Canadian expansion, under the direction of Think Retail’s president Tony Flanz

“Finally, after 120 years, we’re opening retail stores in Canada. We’re excited to share our love for the outdoors and Pacific Northwest roots with all Canadians who share the same values,” said Steve Bock, CEO of Filson. “The tactile experience is the best way for us to show the quality, craftsmanship and durability that’s sewn into every Filson item.”

Filson operates street-front stores in American cities that include Seattle, New York City, Minneapolis, Portland OR, Dallas, San Francisco, Plano TX, Detroit, Austin and Washington DC, as well as two factory outlets. Canada is the second international market for Filson, which also operates a store in London, UK.

Filson (originally named ‘C.C. Filson’s Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers’) was founded in Seattle in 1897, and is known particularly for its clothing and luggage, as well as its guarantee. The company designs, manufactures and distributes its products, which feature rugged designs with prices in the mid to upper-end range. Quality is paramount to the brand, and it guarantees the lifetime of each item against failure or damage from its intended usage, according to Filson’s website. The company is owned by Fossil Group founder Tom Kartsotis, who also owns Detroit-based fashion brand Shinola.

Samsung Announces Massive Toronto Flagship

Samsung has announced that it will open a 21,000 square foot flagship at CF Toronto Eaton Centre this summer, in a retail space that has been the subject of considerable speculation for the past two years. The store will be Samsung’s sixth in Canada, and will be considerably larger than its other stores.

The flagship will be unlike any in Canada, with unique features such as:

  • A Canadian-first — a fully functioning Samsung demo kitchen, allowing visitors to watch cooking demonstrations, get involved in their passion for cooking and delight their senses and taste-buds with on-site culinary creations,
  • Interactive Samsung Gear VR and Gear360 zones to ‘transport’ visitors across Canada, over rollercoasters and beyond,
  • The full Samsung lineup of smartphones and tablets, with an expansive assortment of mobile accessories to personalize guests’ favourite Samsung device,
  • A luxe TV experience zone ready to showcase amazing Samsung picture, sound and design innovations, and allow guests to indulge themselves in their passion for entertainment, and
  • Onsite Samsung Smart Service and trained Galaxy Consultants will guide guests through the experience, answer questions and provide technical support and repairs for mobile products. In addition, Samsung mobile device owners will also be able to coordinate 1:1, in-person sessions with Galaxy Consultants at CF Toronto Eaton Centre.

Canadian design firm Quadrangle is designing the store, which will have two entrances — a street level access point facing onto Yonge Street, as well as a separate entrance from within the mall, shared by Nordstrom, Uniqlo and H&M

South Korean conglomerate Samsung launched its first Canadian location in 2012 with a 1,500 square foot location at Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby. A second store followed in February of 2014, when Samsung opened a 1,900 square foot unit at CF Richmond Centre, also in suburban Vancouver. A 2,200 square foot West Edmonton Mall store followed in November of 2014, and a 2,535 square foot CF Sherway Gardens store in Toronto followed in November of 2015. Most recently, in October of 2016, Samsung unveiled a 3,395 square foot store in the Nordstrom-anchored expansion wing at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre

Samsung will be one of several retailers to open this year in the Yonge-Dundas Square area, considered by many to be Canada’s answer to New York City’s Times Square. A block north, construction continues on a Michael Jordan-branded store at 306 Yonge Street, which opened temporarily in February of 2016. The current Hard Rock Cafe at 276 Yonge Street will be replaced with a Shoppers Drug Mart (possibly as large as 22,000 square feet), and more retail/development announcements will be made in the area, including between Yonge Street’s Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom stores, both of which opened last year.

Bailey Nelson Announces Canadian Corporate Store Expansion

Australian eyewear retailer Bailey Nelson is launching its corporate Canadian store expansion, with plans to expand into various markets over the next several years. Vancouver will be the brand’s Canadian launch city, with Toronto expected to follow soon after.

This spring, Bailey Nelson will open its first corporate Canadian store at 1135 Robson Street, in the heart of Vancouver’s busiest shopping area. A location in Vancouver’s hip and historical Gastown (202 Carrall Street) will follow, according to Bailey Nelson’s North American managing director, Bree Stanlake. Prior to the Vancouver store openings, Bailey Nelson will host a number of ‘community activations’, she said.

Both deals were negotiated by Martin Moriarty and Maris Negris of CBRE in Vancouver

Bailey Nelson is looking to enter the Toronto market this fall, according to Ms. Stanlake, with two lease negotiations currently in the works. Bailey Nelson is working with CBRE Toronto Urban Retail Team as well, under the direction of Jackson TurnerArlin Markowitz, and Alex Edmison

The company will look to open multiple locations in each market it enters, she noted, clustering stores in order to build a customer base. Following Vancouver and Toronto, Bailey Nelson will seek to expand into Ottawa and other major Canadian cities.

Bailey Nelson will test out the Canadian market and while there’s no ‘ultimate goal’ as to the number of stores it will open, Ms. Stanlake noted that Canada could see as many as 40-50 Bailey Nelson stores open over the next four years. Stores will generally range in the 1,000 square foot to 2,000 square foot range, and its initial focus will be on urban street fronts, in order to create connections within local communities. Shopping mall locations will also eventually play a key role in the company’s expansion, said Ms. Stanlake, particularly given our climate and exceptional foot traffic at leading centres.

Until recently, Canada was home to a number of licensed Bailey Nelson stores. These have since been converted to another banner, which we’ll discuss in a separate article.

Founded in Bondi Beach (Sydney) Australia in 2012, Bailey Nelson retails high-quality, on-trend glasses and sunglasses at a moderate price-point. It designs and manufactures its high-quality frames and uses top-quality lenses. Prices are a fraction of the cost of some competitors, and customer reviews reflect satisfaction with the company’s customer service and product selection.

INDOCHINO Launches Impressive West Edmonton Mall Location [Photos]

Vancouver-based INDOCHINO, now the world’s largest made-to-measure menswear company, has opened its first retail showroom in the province of Alberta. Located on the second level of West Edmonton Mall, the new 3,200 square foot space features an eye-catching graphic exterior, and an interior with prominent ceramic flooring.

The store features four ‘zones’ as described by INDOCHINO’s Senior Director of Retail, Dean Handspiker, including areas for suiting, fabric, shirting and two lounges — one for grooms, and one for tailoring. The company’s other showrooms lack a tailoring area on the selling floor, making the new Edmonton location particularly unique. Furnishings in the space are from Vancouver-based eCommerce retailer Article, which is experiencing explosive growth, as discussed in Retail Insider last week

Fixtures in the the new store were created by Vancouver-based Peregrine, which works with some of the country’s leading retailers and their interiors.

The Edmonton store’s design is intended to make shoppers comfortable, according to Mr. Handspiker, while video screens allow customers to ‘bring the suit to life’.

The West Edmonton Mall showroom is INDOCHINO’s sixth Canadian location, and is one of three to be opening in Canada this spring. On Thursday, April 6, INDOCHINO will open its second Alberta location at Calgary’s CF Chinook Centre and on Thursday, April 27, it will open at Metropolis at Metrotown, east of Vancouver. Indochino’s other Canadian showrooms are in Vancouver (Yaletown), Toronto (King Street East and Yorkdale Shopping Centre) Mississauga (Square One) and in Ottawa at CF Rideau Centre

INDOCHINO announced a major international expansion last year, with the goal to open about 150 retail stores globally while selling a million suits annually by the year 2020. The company was founded in Vancouver in 2007 as an online custom suit retailer and in late 2015, co-founder Kyle Vucko was replaced as CEO by Shop.ca founder Drew Green.

INDOCHINO’s retail spaces/showrooms are an extension of the company’s online made-to-measure experience. INDOCHINO customers are paired with a Style Guide in-store, who helps them design one-of-a-kind suits or shirts. Style Guides take measurements, assist with fabric selection, and walk shoppers through custom options including buttons, vents, pockets, lapels and monograms. Each garment is made to order and delivered within four weeks, when customers can return for a second fitting to ensure a perfect fit. The showroom works in tandem with INDOCHINO’s e-commerce website, so men can access their profiles and reorder at their convenience. The showrooms are designed to be modern and bright, boasting comfortable reception areas and lounges dedicated to serving groom parties and other groups.

2016 was record setting for INDOCHINO, with three new showrooms, year-over-year omnichannel sales growth of 54% and year-over-year sales in comparable showrooms ending the year at 32%. In February 2016, the company announced a US $30 million strategic investment by Dayang Group — the world’s largest suit manufacturer — which has helped accelerate the company’s expansion plans, significantly enhanced the product offering to its customers, and generated additional operating efficiencies.

In 2017 the company’s growth trajectory has continued, with January’s year-over-year omnichannel sales growth over 50%, according to INDOCHINO.

Oberfeld Snowcap represents INDOCHINO as brokerage in Canada. According to Mr. Handspiker, future INDOCHINO showrooms will ideally be in the 2,500 square foot to 3,500 square foot range.

New York City-based cycle studio concept SoulCycle has revealed that it will open two more Canadian locations this year, after having opened its first Canadian studio in Toronto last month. A second Toronto studio will open in July, and a first Vancouver studio, with a location that has been a mystery until now, will also open this summer.

SoulCycle’s first Canadian studio, measuring just over 4,000 square feet, opened in late February at 435 King Street West. The studio includes a 55-bike cycling studio, as well as a small retail store and locker room areas for both men and women. Located just off of Spadina Avenue, the area is increasingly becoming hip and upscale, as new residents move into new condominium buildings in the area. Retail, restaurants and other amenities continue to open in the area.

SoulCycle’s second Canadian location will open in July of this year within the First Capital Realty-owned Yorkville Village retail complex, formerly called Hazelton Lanes. The mall is located in one of Canada’s wealthiest residential areas, and luxury retail continues to open nearby. According to a First Capital Realty lease plan, SoulCycle will measure 4,028 square feet and will feature access from both within the mall, as well as from Avenue Road. The Yorkville Village SoulCycle lease deal, as well as the 435 King Street deal, were both negotiated by Hilary Kellar-Parsons and Tyler Sopik of Avison Young

A Vancouver SoulCycle location will open this summer in the downtown Yaletown area. According to a corporate submission on datagovca.com, SoulCycle will be located at 1128 Mainland Street, in a strategic location steps away from the Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain station. According to Spacelist.ca, the retail space at 1128 Mainland Street measures 3,518 square feet.

The Vancouver lease deal was negotiated by Martin Moriarty and Mario Negris of CBRE in Vancouver.

SoulCycle incorporates upper body exercises and high-energy music into each class, set in a dark candlelit room. SoulCycle is known for it’s cult following of riders, with a loyal clientele including names such as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, Demi Lovato, and Lady Gaga.

The company also offers a range of men and women’s athletic wear, in a separate retail space. The merchandise mix is consistent with SoulCycle’s American retail locations, featuring branded SoulCycle gear that is primarily in its signature yellow colour.

SoulCycle was founded by Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice in 2005. The company was acquired by Equinox Holdings Inc. in 2011, which currently operates two Equinox Fitness locations in Toronto and Vancouver. Equinox Fitness is a subsidiary of The Related Companies

Casper Establishes 1st Physical Retail Presence in Canada

New York City-based sleep brand Casper has launched a retail presence in Canada, through a partnership with Williams-Sonoma-owned retailer West Elm. Until now, Casper has only been available to Canadian consumers online.

Casper launched within the West Elm store at Toronto’s Liberty Village earlier this month and according to Casper’s Canadian general manager Nicole Tapscott, it’s been a hit with consumers. As eCommerce is less developed in Canada compared to in the U.S., having a physical presence in this country presents the opportunity for shoppers to see and experience the product before making a purchase, she noted.

It’s the first time that Casper has offered its products within a retailer on a cash-and-carry basis, according to Ms. Tapscott. In the United States, West Elm shoppers can make a purchase in-store, but Casper products are subsequently delivered. Casper launched at American West Elm stores in the summer of 2016.

Casper partnered with West Elm, which has stores in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver, because of the retailer’s strong reputation as well as modern design, reasonable prices, and connection to community. While Toronto’s Liberty Village West Elm is currently the only Canadian location to carry Casper, Ms. Tapscott says that more could follow.

In the spring of 2016, Casper hosted its pop-up “Canadian Nap Tour”, bringing its “Napmobile” to Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. Customers were given the opportunity to take a short nap in one of Casper’s beds in one of several portable “Snooze Rooms” that the company set up in various locations.

In November of 2016, the New York Post reported that Casper was planning to open physical stores, based on help wanted ads on its website. The company won’t officially comment on any such plans at this time.

Backed by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Adam Levine and Ashton Kutcher, Casper launched in 2014 as a direct-to-consumer online mattress retailer, with its product delivered in a “how did they do that?” sized box. Casper’s memory foam mattress comes in a variety of sizes, ranging in price between $725 and $1275 (Canadian), depending on size. Recently, the company has expanded its product assortment to include a “perfect pillow” pillow-in-a-pillow and soft, breathable sheets, and even dog beds. Casper keeps its prices reasonable by eliminating commission-driven wholesale channels and related costs, including retail space. The company’s phenomenal growth saw it being declared one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies in the World” and in 2015, Casper won the title of TIME Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2015”, with sales in excess of US $100 million.

MUJI Announces Another Store as it Continues Canadian Expansion

Minimalist Japanese retailer MUJI has announced that it will open a fourth store in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this summer, as it plans to eventually operate up to 20 Canadian stores by the year 2020.

MUJI entered the Canadian market in November of 2014, when it opened a 4,400 square foot store in downtown Toronto’s ‘The Atrium’, at 20 Dundas Street. A 5,225 square foot MUJI subsequently opened at Mississauga’s Square One in November of 2015, and in October of 2016, a 6,375 square foot store opened at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre

This summer, MUJI will open its fourth GTA location at CF Markville, an enclosed shopping mall in Markham. The store will span in excess of 6,000 square feet, and will boast a prominent corner location near entrance 10 on the mall’s main level, across from Roots, The Gap, and Forever 21, and next to the mall’s Joey restaurant, as per the floor plan below.

In October of last year, MUJI’s Canadian President, Toru Akita, revealed that MUJI plans to operate between 15 and 20 Canadian stores by the year 2020.

In January of this year, MUJI announced its first two Vancouver store locations, both of which will be larger than its current Toronto stores. A 10,000 square foot Robson Street flagship will open later this year, as well as an 8,000 square foot unit at Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby. A third location in the Vancouver area has also been secured, and it will open in 2018.

Known for being innovative and its products being affordable and unbranded, MUJI carries various household items, furniture, appliances, stationery and apparel. With hundreds of stores worldwide (over 400 in Japan and about 400 internationally), it saves money by spending little to nothing on market research and advertising. MUJI is short for Mujirushi Ryohin, or no-brand superior items, and was founded in 1980 as the private-label brand of a major supermarket chain.

Shumaker Opens Impressive Kingston Flagship (Photos)

Canadian footwear brand Shumaker (pronounced ‘shoe maker’) has opened its largest store to date in Kingston, Ontario. The new location marks the company’s first street-front retail space, and is part of a larger expansion that is seeing Shumaker open several stores this year.

The two-level 3,200 square foot Kingston store, located at 202 Princess Street (just off the intersection of Montreal Street and Princess Street), is Shumaker’s 10th store to date. The space includes high ceilings, exquisite chandeliers, grand antique mirrors, and a touch of modernism, blending the charm of the exposed brick and stone, burnt wood, and century old space with its typical bright environment that includes modern white furniture and its signature red and rose gold accents.

The store was designed in-house, and Olivier Raoult of FR Capital Realty coordinated that lease deal.

The Princess Street building has an interesting history. Originally constructed in 1887, it once belonged to W.J. Baker, tobacconist, known for its special “Queen’s blend and Baker’s Cut Plug”. The second floor formerly housed a billiards parlour. Princess Street, formerly called ‘Store Street’, is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, in a city that was once Canada’s capital.

An 11th Shumaker store is set to open later this year, in Toronto. Located at 2581 Yonge Street in Toronto (between Eglinton Avenue and Lawrence Avenue), the new store will be on a stretch of Yonge Street that is adjacent to some of the city’s most affluent residential areas, including Lawrence Park.

Shumaker was founded in 1948 as a footwear manufacturer and distributor, and is now based in Mississauga. Known for its moderately priced contemporary casual footwear for men and women, Shumaker also boasts wholesale distribution in over 1,600 points of sale across Canada.

The company opened its first physical store locations in 2015, adopting an interior design featuring white interiors with strong red accents. In August of 2015, Shumaker’s first store opened at Peterborough’s Lansdowne Place, followed by locations in Barrie (RioCan Georgian Mall), Bellville (Quinte Mall), Hamilton (CF Lime Ridge), Ottawa (two stores: Carlingwood Shopping Centre and Place d’Orleans) as well as two Toronto area stores (Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga and CF Markville in Markham).

Shumaker’s Director of Operations, Ishan Singh, notes that the retailer continues to be in discussions with several landlords for locations in Ontario, both within shopping centres as well as urban street-fronts. Mr. Singh says that he is the primary contact for landlords regarding any potential future deals for Shumaker, at this time, and that more locations are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Richard Mille to Open 1st Freestanding Canadian Boutique

Richard Mille in Yorkville

One of the world’s priciest and most prestigious watch brands, Richard Mille, will open a freestanding store in Toronto’s upscale Yorkville area this spring. Swiss-based Richard Mille features some watch styles that are priced in excess of $1 million.

The eponymous Richard Mille brand was founded in 1999 in collaboration with Audemars Piguet, and is based in Les Breuleux, in the Canton of Jura, Switzerland. Its first product, the RM001 went on sale in 2001. Many of the company’s watches have opening prices in the six figures and in some instances, considerably more. The brand’s most famous models include the Tourbillon RM 008 (chronograph tourbillon) and the sapphire split seconds (chronograph tourbillon) RM 056. The RM 008 combines a tourbillon movement with manual winding, a chronograph split-seconds, a torque indicator, and a power reserve indicator. The company claims that these are among the most advanced watches in the world, with starting prices in excess of $700,000.

The Toronto boutique will be located at 118 Yorkville Avenue, at the base of the prestigious Hazelton Hotel. Jeweller Louis Black will operate the new Richard Mille boutique under a licensing agreement, and the new Mille space replaces the Louis Black store that previously occupied the retail space.

(LOOKING TOWARDS THE NEW BOUTIQUE FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF YORKVILLE AVENUE)

Richard Mille boutiques are quite rare, with locations in selected cities that boast affluent locals and tourists. In the United States, there are five Richard Mille boutiques in four cities, including Aspen CO, Beverly Hills CA (222 N. Rodeo Drive), Las Vegas (Shops at Crystals), and two in the Miami area — at Bal Harbour Shops, and at Brickell City Centre

(THE PRICEY HAZELTON HOTEL INCLUDES LUXURY CONDOMINIUMS ABOVE, SIZED BETWEEN 2,815 SQUARE FEET AND OVER 8,000 SQUARE FEET FOR A PENTHOUSE. PRICES FOR HOTEL SUITES AND RESIDENCES ARE BOTH STRATOSPHERIC).

Richard Mille joins a number of other luxury brands that are opening stores on Toronto’s Yorkville Avenue. Last summer, Christian Louboutin opened its first freestanding Canadian store at 99 Yorkville Avenue, and pricey streetwear brand Off-White quietly opened a store in December of 2016 at 83 Yorkville Avenue. Chanel will open an 8,700 square foot store at 100 Yorkville Avenue in a few months, and earlier this month we revealed that Jimmy Choo will open its second Toronto store at 102 Yorkville Avenue, in a building that will be finished construction in late 2018. A number of other luxury brands have been in the area for over a year, including a Kiton shop that faces Yorkville Avenue, as well as Spanish jeweller Carrera y Carrera, which operates its only North American store just off Yorkville Avenue on Old York Lane.
